THE TWO TYPES OF CONFIDENCE: WHICH ONE DO YOU HAVE? WHICH ONE DO YOU NEED?
The way I see it, there are two types of confidence:
The first type of confidence is intrinsic confidence.
This confidence comes from the inside out. It’s your belief in yourself. This may look like knowing you can figure something out, knowing you are inherently good, knowing that you are inherently worthy.
You can absolutely develop intrinsic confidence. AND your baseline of intrinsic confidence, in my own personal view, is that your intrinsic confidence comes from your connection to your soul and has a lot to do with your childhood and how you were reflected (or not) by your primary caregivers / parents.
The second type of confidence is extrinsic confidence.
This type of confidence comes from the outside in. You do NOT have extrinsic confidence that you can ride a bicycle before you ever learn how to ride a bicycle. This makes sense!
However, as you take the steps to learn, practice, over time you become a bicycle-riding master, and you can easily say that you have confidence in riding a bicycle.
The importance here in the distinction between intrinsic and extrinsic confidence, is that you do not need to WAIT until you FEEL CONFIDENT before you go after your dreams.
Of COURSE you are not going to feel confident that you can build a business as a facilitator / healer if you’ve never done that before.
You see, the thing I hear from practitioners MOST often is that they doubt themselves and they don’t feel confident in their ability to build a successful business in the work that they feel deeply is their true calling.
I am here to say… OF COURSE YOU DON’T FEEL CONFIDENT YET… YOU HAVEN’T DONE IT YET!
That would be like asking a child who has never ridden a 2-wheel bicycle to feel very confident in riding a bicycle before they ever attempt to ride a bicycle
.Let’s be childlike in our decision to move towards our dreams
…Be open, curious and courageous
…Be willing to try, be willing to fail and get up and try again
…Don’t go it alone!
I remember my dad running down the street with me holding the back of my 2-wheel bicycle over and over again, while I was getting the hang of it and finding my balance. Before that, I had training wheels!
Give yourself a break if you deeply desire to build a healing practice, but you’re not feeling confident.
Get some support from those further along the path, and start taking just the next step!
You can also rely on your intrinsic confidence. What is something else in your life that once seemed impossible that you now feel very confident in?
You can dig-deep to those feelings of times when you took a risk and succeeded.
You’ve got this.
